A simpler way to work with text
Markdown is a plain text format that uses a few simple symbols to organize your writing. A # makes a heading, a dash starts a list, and ** adds emphasis.
The file ends in .md. It stays readable in a text editor and becomes a formatted document in apps that support Markdown. Your words stay easy to copy, edit, and move.
Simple text. Useful structure. No special editor required.

A PDF is useful for sharing a finished page. When you want to work with its contents, Markdown gives you a flexible starting point.

Upload, review, and save from one browser window. No software to install.
Open the converter and upload a file, or select PDF link and paste a direct, public PDF URL. Start with a PDF that has selectable text.
Select Convert to Markdown. Switch between Preview and Markdown to check the text, headings, and reading order. Review any conversion warnings.
Copy the Markdown or download a .md file. Save your result before leaving the page, then open it in your notes app or text editor.
A quick check before you start: try selecting a sentence in your PDF. If the page is an image, run OCR first. Review complex tables and multi-column layouts after conversion.
A little help along the way
What to expect before, during, and after your conversion.
Go to the converterMarkdown is plain text with simple formatting marks for headings, lists, links, and emphasis. A PDF preserves the appearance of a page; a Markdown file is easier to edit and reuse as text. Keep your original PDF when exact layout, images, or print formatting matter.
Open the PDF to Markdown converter, choose Upload file, and select your PDF. Click Convert to Markdown, review the Preview or Markdown tab, then use Copy or Download .md. You can also choose Try a sample PDF in the converter to see the process before using your own document.
Yes. Choose PDF link in the converter and paste the direct address of a publicly accessible PDF. A webpage containing a PDF link is not the same as the PDF itself. Links that require sign-in, a CAPTCHA, or access to a private network are not supported. If a website blocks the download, save the PDF to your device and upload it instead.
The current tool supports one PDF at a time, up to 10 MB and 50 pages. PDFs with selectable text work best. Unlock password-protected documents before uploading them. Word documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and image files are not currently supported.
This version does not include OCR, the process that recognizes text inside an image. Run OCR on a scan first, save it as a PDF with a text layer, and then convert it. Images, diagrams, and text inside images are not transcribed by this tool.
The converter focuses on readable text and basic document structure. Markdown does not reproduce PDF page design. Complex tables, multiple columns, equations, and heading levels may need editing. Review the result against the source before publishing it or adding it to a knowledge base.
A PDF can contain both text pages and image-only pages. The converter keeps the text it can extract and identifies pages that were not transcribed. That notice is included in the downloaded Markdown. Run OCR on the missing content and convert the document again if you need those pages.
Yes. Download the .md file for an app that supports Markdown, or copy the text into your editor or AI assistant. Supported formatting and file-upload limits vary by app. The converter extracts the source text; it does not summarize, rewrite, or check the facts in your document.
A .md file is a text file. You can open and edit it in a text editor, or use a Markdown-compatible notes app to see formatted headings and lists. In this website, Preview shows the readable version and Markdown shows the formatting symbols. You do not need to learn Markdown syntax to run a conversion.
Uploaded and linked PDFs are processed temporarily and deleted when the conversion request finishes. The result is shown in your browser tab; this tool does not provide a saved document library. Download or copy your Markdown before leaving or refreshing the page.
Bring a PDF. Take the words wherever you need them.
